Fast¯¯Forward
a message forwarding utility
version 1.10
by J. Webb, DeltaVision Systems
What is Fast¯¯Forward?
======================
This utility is meant to be run by nodes, not by points. In
general you could say it re-routes netmail. Fast¯¯Forward scans
your netmail area and forwards messages which are addressed to
your own node number but are listed at a different address in
PRVTUSER.LST.
If you supply (or used to supply) another node or point with
mail this utility might be handy in at least two situations:
1) Mail for one of your points is addressed to your own node
number, or
2) One of your nodes/points moves to another address.
How does it work?
=================
Fast¯¯Forward works like this:
1) it searches for your The-Box or Binkley configuration file
(TB.CFG or BINKLEY.CFG) in folders pointed to by the
environment variables MAILER, BINKLEY, QBBS or LED. It also
looks in the current folder. your own address defined by
the 'ADDRESS' keyword and the log file name (the STATUSLOG
keyword) are extracted from this file. Fast¯¯Forward
supports up to 10 ADDRESS statements for people with AKAs.
2) it searches for AREAS.BBS in the same folders as above.
From this file it gets the path to your NetMail area.
3) PRVTUSER.LST can also be located in any of the folders
specified above. This file contains the user names and node
numbers in the following format:
Last, First 4D-address
example:
Webb, Jon 2:282/301.2
Runia, Theo 2:282/301.0
Note: the address always starts at column 37 (counting
from 1). The message editor LED can create such a file.
4) The NetMail area is scanned for messages addressed to one
of the names found in PRVTUSER.LST, but addressed to your
own node number. Such messages are forwarded to the correct
address, and the original message is deleted. The 'Kill-
when-Sent' and 'Forwarded' bits are set in the forwarded
message.
INSTALLATION
============
Simply ensure that the files AREAS.BBS, PRVTUSER.LST and TB.CFG
or BINKLEY.CFG are in a folder specified by one of the
environment variables. Then run Fast¯¯Forward. A short status
message and the result of the run are saved to the log file.
Fast¯¯Forward does not need to be run each time mail is
processed, you can run it only once a day if you want.
PROBLEMS
========
Just one: If you use LED and move it from one drive to another,
or from one path to another, LED will still try to use the old
PRVTUSER.LST. Fast¯¯Forward uses the environment variables, but
LED saves the path to this file in LED.OPT.
